Trends 2011

Last evening Elte hosted an event with Lynda Reeves (Publisher Canadian House & Home Magazine, President House & Home Media). It was a people packed event despite the dismal weather. Lynda Reeves can really draw a huge crowd.

Her presentation was entitled “2011 Trends”. Some trends appear for a season and then disappear (think crystal chandeliers overlaid with sheer drum shades), others have more staying power (think stainless steel appliances) and can become the front and centre of design for a decade.

My personal design preference is for rooms to be filled with items that have longevity. I’m a classicist at heart, however even I can get bored looking at the same things year after year – even if I do love them. In the same way I’ll buy a new scarf or two or three to update a winter coat, I will change toss pillows on a fairly regular basis and I’ll also move my art to different rooms. All of this can be achieved in an afternoon and the results can be really satisfying.

Some of Lynda’s trend picks for 2011 are listed below, only time will tell what will last a season and what will become a classic!

Blue Upholstered Sofas

Upholstery with Raw Edges

Black everywhere – kitchen cabinets, walls, furniture. Black is a huge colour trend. Charcoal grey walls are a slightly softer option for those nervous of going completely to the dark side.

Multi-Arm Light Fixtures

Feature Chairs (I want one of these)

Natural Wood – think Restoration Hardware’s new range of furniture.

My name is Andrew Metrick and I’m from Elte. My brother Jamie and I make up the fourth generation of our family business. I was the son that ran the microphone around to the people from the audience who had questions for Lynda. (All Jamie had to do was hold the bowl of tickets for the $2,000 gift card while Lynda selected the winner; a much easier task if you ask me. People from the audience can really turn on you if you don’t call on them to ask their question.) Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for coming to the event and also for writing this blog article. It’s great to see someone look out for their readers who may not have been able to attend that evening. I hope you had a great time. If there’s every anything I can do, please be sure to call.

    All the best,

Thanks Andrew! I quite agree you had the much harder task! Really looking forward to the Style At Home event.
